Data methodology
Swift Penguin is an educational site: free calculators, guides, and company reference pages. We are not a broker, not an adviser, and we do not recommend buying or selling any stock or fund.
Where stock data comes from
- Finnhub — live and delayed quotes, company profile (name, exchange, industry, market capitalization, shares outstanding), key metrics (P/E, EPS, margins, dividend yield, 52-week range, beta), company news, earnings history, and SEC as-reported financial statements (10-K / 10-Q line items used to build income, balance sheet, and cash-flow tables).
- Yahoo Finance — price candles for charts (with Finnhub as a chart fallback). Business-summary text when available. Deep links to Yahoo financials and earnings/estimates pages on each company page.
- SEC EDGAR— linked from every stock page so you can open the company's official 10-K / 10-Q filings.
We do not scrape SEC HTML for risk-factor text. Official filings remain the authoritative source for legal disclosures.
How we calculate or display metrics
- P/E (price-to-earnings)
- Share price ÷ EPS. We generally display the vendor’s normalized / TTM P/E when provided (Finnhub). If either price or EPS is missing, we show Unavailable.
- Dividend yield
- Annual dividend ÷ share price (indicated annual yield from the vendor when available).
- Market cap
- Share price × shares outstanding. Finnhub returns market capitalization in millions; we scale for display.
- Profit margin
- Net income ÷ revenue when the vendor supplies a margin ratio, or as reported in financial-data modules.
- Free cash flow
- Prefer the vendor’s free-cash-flow field. Otherwise: operating cash flow − capital expenditure (CapEx treated as a positive outflow amount).
Cached snapshots vs live data
Each /stocks/… page ships with a cached snapshot in the HTML (price, key ratios, and — for major names — multi-year statement tables) so crawlers and first paint always see real structure and numbers. In the browser we fetch Finnhub + Yahoo Finance and replace the snapshot with live (often delayed) vendor data. Snapshot figures are illustrative placeholders, not a substitute for filings.
Delayed, estimated, unavailable
- Delayed — exchange and vendor rules mean quotes on stock pages and lookup tools may not be real-time. Treat prices as indicative.
- Estimated — earnings calendars often include analyst estimates (EPS / revenue) before a company reports. We label estimate vs actual when the feed distinguishes them.
- Unavailable — if a vendor field is missing, fails to load, or a symbol has no coverage, we show Unavailable or an empty table. We do not invent numbers.
Stock research pages revalidate about hourly. Always confirm material decisions against primary filings and your broker.
Calculators on this site
Position size, P&L, DCA, compound growth, and similar tools run formulas in your browser from the inputs you enter. They are arithmetic helpers — not forecasts or trade recommendations.
