Crypto Investing Basics (No Coin Picks)
By William · Swift Penguin · Educational content · Not financial advice

Crypto search results are mostly tip farms and screenshots of Lambos. This is the other version: how the plumbing differs from stocks, what usually wrecks beginners, and which free tools on this site map to those jobs. For a plain explainer of Bitcoin, Ethereum, stablecoins, and alts — still with zero buy tips — read the What is cryptocurrency? guide. I am not telling you to buy Bitcoin, Ethereum, or anything else.
How crypto is not just “stocks but digital”
You can hold coins on an exchange (custodial) or in a wallet you control (self-custody). Lose the seed phrase and the coins are gone. That failure mode does not exist the same way in a regulated stock brokerage.
Markets run nearly 24/7. Gaps, weekend spikes, and funding rates on leveraged products are normal. Stops can fail when liquidity vanishes.
Fees are often a percent of notional, plus spreads. Small round-trips add up faster than people expect.
Process before picks
Decide how much of your net worth can sit in something that can drop 50% and stay ugly. Write the number down.
Separate “long-term stack” money from “short-term experiment” money. Mixing them is how people panic-sell the long-term bag.
Learn order types and fee schedules on your venue before size goes up.
Tools that help without a tip sheet
Crypto converter — turn a fiat budget into coin amounts once you paste a price.
Crypto position size — risk % and a stop into units.
Crypto DCA — schedule math vs lump sum under assumptions you control.
Crypto profit — settle a closed trade after fees.
All of those live under /crypto. None of them are a buy signal.
Common ways people get wrecked
Leverage “just this once” with no defined invalidation.
Leaving large balances on sketchy venues for convenience.
Chasing a coin because a timeline yelled. That is not research.
Ignoring tax lots and then panicking at year-end. Rules vary by country — get local advice if needed.
What this post is not
Not a prediction for BTC, ETH, or the next meme.
Not financial advice. Crypto can go to zero. Only use money you can lose.
Want the vocabulary first? The guide “What is cryptocurrency?” walks through Bitcoin, Ethereum, stablecoins, and alts without telling you to buy any of them: /guides/what-is-cryptocurrency
